Disability Equality Training & Consultation
BOP delivers a wide range of training and consultancy services within the UK and internationally.
As a sector leader we can help make your employees and organisation feel more confident and give you the skills to drive positive change and dismantle ableism. Options range from TRAINING SESSIONS to in depth CONSULTANCY AND ORGANISATIONAL DEVELOPMENT.
What is Disability Equality Training?
Our Disability Equality Training (DET) is comprehensive disabled-led training that looks at what actively disables people and at disability from a cultural context. DET provides you with the skills and confidence to look at removing barriers for disabled people which in turn leads to a more accessible and inclusive environment in whatever you do.
Training is designed so that participants leave feeling more comfortable and confident in their interactions with disabled people. The knowledge, skills & tools they gain during the session will apply across all areas of their work and motivate them to make a positive change.
DET is different from disability awareness training which focuses on impairments and impairment specific advice, whereas DET still gives practical advice but also gives participants a broader perspective & knowledge. This helps participants to make informed decisions moving forward after the training.
BOP knows that disabled people continue to experience significant barriers in the arts and elsewhere and our training is a relaxed way to skill up and ensure you are not perpetuating ableist behaviours or practices.
Why work with BOP?
Our creative training has been developed by a disabled-led team with many years experience of delivering training that is informative and engaging. Our core training is delivered by our team of Youth Arts Consultants thereby providing employment and work experience to young disabled people setting out in the sector.
“The training overall was really good. Really well delivered, presenters in particular were very engaging. Session was delivered with good humour and individuals expertise and knowledge really came across.”
BOP can provide you with a tailor made package of training and consultation, that can be provided on or offline.

How long & how much?
Training is underpinned by extensive knowledge of equality and access within the arts sector as well as the core issues that impact on our understanding of how we view disability and think about equality within society.
Our DET package covers topics including:
- Cultural representation – How disability is viewed and it’s impact
- Models of disability and how they are used
- Legislation & Activism – Where we’ve been and how we got here.
- Individualism & Statistics
- Language
- Mitigating Barriers
Our TAP package covers topics including:
- Access Requirements Forms – what are they and how to use them
- Access Statements – what are they and how to use them
- Planning for Access – a walk though of things to consider when planning accessible activities
The shape of each training session can be adapted to fit with your requirements but in general, our standard DET sessions are most beneficial if completed in half day sessions (3-4 hours). For in-person delivery we would do this all in one go, but for online delivery we can split this across two sessions, to mitigate against Zoom fatigue.
We can and have delivered training in 2 or 2.5 hour sessions, but in these circumstances some of the details have to be dropped.
Every training session is delivered by both a disabled and non-disabled trainer.
Costs for arts and charitable organisations vary depending on how bespoke a session is, and how much preparation is required but a rough baseline costs follow:

Testimonials & Past Participants
“A wee note to say a cracking w/shop – very few occasions I can sit for 3 hours absorbed and interested – very useful and good learning – thank you for organising.”
“Surpassed my expectations. Was able to ask the “rookie” questions that I was afraid I’d have to ask. The atmosphere and openness was truly conducive to productive learning. Excellent value for money.”
“The most successful thing was that I felt challenged by some of the exercises and kept thinking after the training was finished. It felt to me that the training really ‘got through’ to me. I also felt inspired and wanted to pass on what I’d learned.”
“The training overall was really good. Really well delivered, presenters in particular were very engaging. Session was delivered with good humour and individuals expertise and knowledge really came across.”
