Annaliese Broughton is a working-class neurodivergent poet, performer, theatre-maker, and facilitator. Her work responds to social injustices, ‘taboo’ subjects and things she finds interesting, annoying, or funny. In 2020 she was awarded a micro-commission by Dumfries and Galloway Arts Live to createMia/Me, a poetry film made with a phone and a cast of roped in family members. Through spoken word and BSL,Mia/Me explores deafness, asylum seeking, communication and love and was ‘Highly Commended’ by The John ByrneAward in 2021. Earlier this year, Annaliese was selected to take part in BBC Words First, a talent development scheme for spoken word artists and was recently chosen as the winner of the McLellan Poetry Prize for her poemWe Did Not Know, which highlights and subvertsthe stigma placed on people who live in council housing.
