We’re absolutely thrilled to announce that Susan Douglas-Scott CBE has joined Birds of Paradise as our new Chair of the Board. This marks an exciting new chapter for our company as we continue our mission to challenge the exclusion of disabled people from theatre and the arts.

Susan brings an incredible wealth of experience in governance, advocacy, and inclusive leadership across the disability, health, and charity sectors. Her people-centred approach and unwavering dedication to equality and diversity make her the perfect fit to guide us into our next phase of growth.

Susan has been a long-time supporter of our pioneering work – she truly understands our vision and the role we play in transforming Scotland’s cultural landscape. As Chair of the NHS Golden Jubilee Board and the newly appointed Chair of the National Care Service Interim Advisory Board, she knows firsthand the challenges and opportunities we face.

Beyond her professional achievements, Susan is a passionate supporter of the arts—she’s a trustee of Indepen-dance and also sings with the European Queer Choir. Her personal connection to our work runs deep.

With government cuts affecting vital support like Access to Work, the place of disabled artists in the cultural landscape remains precarious. Our mission has never been more critical, and with Susan’s leadership, we’re ready to face these challenges head-on.

With Susan’s guidance, we’ll continue creating world-class productions that place disabled artists centre stage, delivering training and consultation that makes the arts more accessible, and influencing not just Scottish theatre but global conversations around disability and access.
